In an award ceremony hosted by the National Library of Latvia, on 28th March, the most beautiful books published last year in Latvia were presented with the Golden Apple Tree awards (“Zelta ābele”). An award for lifetime contribution to the Latvian literature and publishing industry was given to the long-standing director of the National Library, Andris Vilks, and the artist of the year award – to Ineta Berkmane.
Valdis Grēviņš' collection “Veca cilvēka dziesmas” (“Old People Songs”) was recognized as the most beautiful book in the “Poetry” category. It was designed by artist Daiga Brinkmane, printed at Jelgava Typography, and published by "VESTA-LK".
Niko Kazantzaki's “The Last Temptation of Christ” won an award as the most beautiful prose publication. Artist – Daiga Brinkmane; printed at Jelgava Typography; publisher – "VESTA-LK"
John Hiden's book “Defender of Minorities. Paul Schiemann” won in the category “Documentary Publications”. Artist – Daiga Brinkmane; printed at Jelgava Typography; publisher – "VESTA-LK".
Māris Rungulis' "Pastaiga mirušo pilsētā" (“A Walk in the City of Dead”) was recognized as the most visually successful book for children. Design – Ūna Laukmane; illustrations – Kristians Brekte; printed at Jelgava Typography; published – "Liels un mazs".
Dainis Bruģis' book "Cēsu Jaunā pils" (“Cēsis New Castle”) was the laureate in the category "Scientific literature". Artist – Inese Hofmane; printed at Jelgava Typography; publisher – Cēsis Culture and Tourism Centre. This book was also awarded the news site "Delfi" reader's choice award, voted for from 27th February – 27th March, 23:59 pm.
Silvija Grosa's "Brīvmūrniecība. Zīmes un Rīgas arhitektūra" (“Freemasonry Signs and the Architecture of Riga”) was voted the most beautiful "Educational Literature" publication Artist – Annija Grosa; printing – Jelgava Typography; published by "Sana Solaris"
"The Glass Mountain" by Vilis Inde received the award for best "Reference Literature" publication. Design – Anna Aizsilniece; illustrations – Miķelis Fišers; printed at Jelgava Typography; published by the Latvian National Library Foundation.
Kaspars Eihmanis' work "Formosa. Skaistā sala" (“Formosa. The Beautiful Island”) was voted the most beautiful Art Publication. Artist – Ineta Berkmane; printed by "Dardedze Hologrāfija"; publisher – "Muretart".
The award in the category "Photohraphy Books" went to Alexander Gronsky and Ksenia Babushkina's collective work "Schema". Artist – Vladimir Leibgam; printed at Jelgava Typography; publisher – "Orbīta".
The competition for the most beautiful books has been held already 24 times. This year saw 35 publishers with 114 books competing for awards, with 41 nominated in 9 categories.
