Inga Gaile, Madara Gruntmane, Marija Luīze Meļķe participates in Birmingham Multicultural festival
For thousands of years, people from different parts of the world have gathered in Britain. Millennia ago the invading Roman soldiers came to UK; the shores of this great land gave shelter to Dutch merchants; ill fated slaves had been brought here from Africa five hundred years ago. Two World Wars brought people from all corners of the globe; the South Asian nations came to UK to serve the ‘Queen and the Country’. People from different nation, religion, caste came to UK to find a better a future.
All these people brought their language, culture and heritage with them. This mixture and explosion of our different background enriched the culture of Britain. In London alone people speak 250 languages every day which makes it the world's most multilingual city! Birmingham, on the other hand, is no less remarkable- 110 languages are spoken here. The magnitude of this cultural variation is truly a remarkable feat of our diverse society. No wonder this diverse and strong culture is the beauty and strength of Britain, a place we all now call home.
