Most books have been published in Lithuanian, Estonian, and Spanish, with the most translated authors last year being Anete Melece, Nora Ikstena, and Semjons Haņins.
During the past year, 54 works by Latvian authors were published in 19 countries. Eight Latvian literature translations were released in Lithuanian, while six works were published in Estonian and Spanish. The significant number of works in Lithuanian is largely because 2023 was declared the Year of Latvian Literature in Lithuania. Children's book author and illustrator Anete Melece's works were released in seven countries last year, while Nora Ikstena's and Semjons Haņins' works were released in five.
Of all the books released, 17 are poetry, 19 are children's literature, and 15 are prose works, with 3 poetry and prose anthologies also published abroad. The most translated works include Anete Melece's "Stella's Stolen Sleep" (5 translations), Nora Ikstena's "Soviet Milk" (4 translations), and Semjons Haņins' poetry collection "But Not With It" (3 translations).
"We are very delighted about the release of the contemporary Latvian prose anthology in France, translated by Nicolas Auzanneau and published by 'Magellan&Cie' allowing French readers to get to know the works of Jānis Joņevs, Andra Neiburga, Arno Jundze, Pauls Bankovskis, Sabīne Košeļeva, and Svens Kuzmins. A tremendous effort was invested in the poetry anthology published by the Lithuanian publishing house "Slinktys" which includes more than 40 works by classical and contemporary Latvian poets," said Rita Dementjeva, representative of the Latvian Literature platform.
There is also a pride in the fact that new territories were reached – two works, Anete Melece's "The Kiosk" and Nora Ikstena's "Soviet Milk" were released in the Dutch language last year, where nothing from Latvian literature had been published for many years. Several fragments from Andris Kuprišs' story collection "Berlin" were published in the Dutch literary journal "Terras" in September.
The majority of all Latvian literary works published abroad have received support from the Latvian Ministry of Culture.
