From March 27 to 30, the international Leipzig Book Fair (Leipziger Buchmesse) takes place in Germany, where Latvia is participating with a national stand and programme of events.
Latvia will be represented by the platform "Latvian Literature" and the company "Jelgavas tipogrāfija," while the programme of events will feature authors Inga Gaile, Vilis Kasims, Andris Kalnozols, and Jānis Joņevs.
The national stand in Leipzig is once again designed in the lines of the Latvian literature export campaign #iamintrovert, featuring illustrations by Reinis Pētersons, with design by Jānis Mercs.
"We are delighted that this year as well, we can introduce the German audience to outstanding Latvian authors and translations of their works into German during the book fair and at the festival 'Leipzig liest!' (Leipzig Reads!), " said Inga Bodnarjuka-Mrazauskas, head of the platform "Latvian Literature."
Several events dedicated to Latvian literature will take place both at the Leipzig Fair and in the city. On March 27, the newly published German translation of V. Kasims' book Lizergīnblūzs (Lysergsäureblues) and A. Kalnozols book Kalendārs mani sauc (Kalender), which will be published in June by edition.fotoTAPETA, will be presented at the cultural venue "die naTO."
On March 28, at the Translation Centre of the International Forum at the book fair and later at the KUB Gallery, there will be a meeting with Inga Gaile and the presentation of her novel Skaistās (Der Geschmack von schwarzer Erde), which was published last year by "Ultraviolett Verlag."
Meanwhile, on March 28, Jānis Joņevs will visit the Leibnizschule, a high school in Leipzig, to conduct a lesson and introduce students to his work Jelgava 94. That same evening, alongside authors from seven European countries, Jānis Joņevs will represent Latvia at the event "Preparing for Everything: On Upheavals and Consequences," which invites reflection on the uncertainty of a crisis-stricken present and showcases contemporary literature from the participating countries.
On March 29, at the cultural venue "die naTO," Latvian author Jānis Joņevs will meet with German author Thomas Podhostnik at the event "Killers and Spies – Between Riga and Chatanga," where they will discuss their works published by the German publishing house "parasitenpresse."
