Valdis Rūmnieks, born in 1951, is a Latvian writer, playwright and literary critic and historian. Rūmnieks is the author of many stories, poems and children's books, as well as collections of jokes and anecdotes. Together with his friend, director Andrejs Migla, he has written five novels. He is the recipient of the Order of the Three Stars, and since 2002 until 2010 he was the chairman of the board of the Riga Latvian Society. His Oak Book earned him the Spring'98 Prize, and his novel Čaks about the renowned Latvian urban poet Čaks (Aleksandrs Čadarainis), Rūmnieks and his colleague Andrejs Migla received the Annual Latvian Literature Award in 2012. He is also a twofold recipient of the Čaks Literary Prize (2001, 2011).
