Anna Žīgure, born in 1948, also known as Anna Velēda Žīgure, is a Latvian translator, writer and ambassador to Finland and Estonia after the Restoration of Independence. She graduated from the University of Tartu. She has translated more than 20 books into Latvian, including the works of Aimée Beekman, Ellen Niit, Teet Kallas, etc., works from Estonian, and Frans Eemil Sillanpää, Pentti Haanpää, and Ella Pennanen, etc,. from Finnish, and works of Hungarian writers. One of her research subjects is Finland and the representation of Finnish people in Latvian press from 1822 until 1945. She has published a book about Latvia and her family history titled Tomēr tik tuvu/Yet So Close in Finnish (Helsinki, 1997) and Estonian (Tallin, 1999). She is the compiler of Edvarts' Virza's book of poems Dievišķā gaismā/In Divine Light (1991) and his Last poems and letters to Veronika Strēlerte (2003). She is an honorary member of the Science Academy of Latvia since 2005, honorary member of the Finnish Writers' Union since 2013 a member of the Latvian Writers' Union since 1979. In 1995, Žīgure was awarded the Order of the Three Stars for her lifetime contribution to Latvian literature, and has received many other awards and honours celebrating her contribution to literature and intercultural communication.
