Jānis Baltvilks (1944–2003) – a poet, writer, ornithologist, one of the most popular authors of children’s books and an author of prose for adults. He has written poetry, short prose, and pop science. Jānis Baltvilks’ poetry is characterised by moral maximalism combined with a unique point of view of a naturalist and his laconic expression. Baltvilks has worked for the editorials of several children’s and youth magazines. He worked for the renowned magazine "Zīlīte" for many years and was its editor in chief. In 2004, a literary prize in children’s literature was established in his name to acknowledge the best authors and illustrators of children’s books.
